EC transfers IAS officer for ‘showing off’ | India News

GANDHINAGAR: A UP-cadre IAS officer appointed as a general observer for the Asarwa and Bapunagar assembly constituencies was removed from election duty after he allegedly posted pictures of him with his government vehicle and other poll personnel, including a cop, on social media.
In a letter to the chief electoral officer of Gujarat on Friday, the Election Commission said Abhishek Singh announced on Instagram his appointment as a general observer and used his official position for “a publicity stunt”. The IAS officer uploaded the pictures on his Twitter handle, too, with the caption, “Joined Ahmedabad as observer for Gujarat elections”.
The poll panel shared with the chief electoral officer pictures uploaded by the officer on different social media platforms, sources said.
Citing the EC communication, officials said the state poll panel took “a very serious view” of the matter and relieved Singh of his duties as general observer for two constituencies. The 2011-batch officer has also been barred from any other election-related duty till further orders. “He was directed to immediately report to his nodal officer in the parent cadre,” an official said.
Gujarat chief election officer P Bharathi said that in accordance with the EC’s guidelines, the responsibility of general observer in Asarwa and Bapunagar had been temporarily handed over to someone else. The EC is expected to appoint a new observer for these constituencies, she said.
