Hyundai Ioniq 5 to launch in India soon: Hyundai’s second EV after Kona electric SUV

Hyundai has announced it is preparing to launch another electric car in India. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 will be the first EV to be based on the company’s dedicated battery electric vehicle platform E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform). The modular platform will be able to support multiple body types and battery options in the future. For now, the first from Hyundai’s Ioniq range is slated to launch in India soon.
The Ioniq 5 is an all-electric hatchback through which Hyundai is introducing the E-GMP platform in India. While the date of launch has not been announced yet, we could expect Hyundai to showcase the car at the upcoming 2023 Auto Expo set to be held from 13-18 January.
Hyundai’s Electric Mobility campaign in India began in 2019 with the launch of India’s first electric SUV – Hyundai Kona Electric. With the introduction of E-GMP to India, Hyundai will be able to provide customers with advanced battery electric vehicles, derived from a platform that is modular, scalable, and versatile. E-GMP will usher in a new league of EVs for the new age customers in India, Unsoo Kim, MD & CEO, Hyundai Motor India Ltd, said.

The Ioniq 5 will be unlike any Hyundai cars on sale in India with a futuristic design and styling that includes LED headlamps with square DRLs, 20-inch sharply-designed alloy wheels, pixelated LED tail lights, a shar-fin antenna, and an integrated spoiler.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 gets a high-speed electric motor that helps it achieve a top speed of 185 km/h. The E-GMP platform allows ‘Ultrafast Charging’ that can charge up to 80 percent in 18 minutes (with a 350 kW DC charger). Internationally, the Ioniq 5 is sold with two battery options – 58 kWh and 72.6 kWh battery packs in RWD and AWD. It is not known yet whether both battery pack options will be made available here.
