Threat of terrorism will loom till vote-bank politics remains: PM Modi in Gujarat | Gujarat Election News

AHMEDABAD: Terrorism once thrived in India because Congress viewed it “from the prism of vote-bank and appeasement politics”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in poll-bound Gujarat’s Kheda on Sunday while contrasting BJP‘s fight against terror with the opposition’s “unchanged mindset” and “backdoor” attempts to save the perpetrators.
“The entire country needs to be extremely vigilant against Congress and other like-minded parties … The threat of terrorism looms till vote-bank politics remains,” Modi said at a poll rally, two days before campaigning ends for the first phase of voting on December 1.
Harking back to the 2008 Batla House encounter in Delhi, the PM accused the Congress leadership of actually “shedding tears” over the slain terrorists. The shootout resulted in the death of two terrorists and a cop. Modi said the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai that very year, and a wave of blasts in Ahmedabad and Surat that left scores dead, were all part of the terror template that BJP had to battle after forming a government at the Centre.
“The BJP government dexterously worked on busting sleeper cells. We would nab terrorists and go after their networks, unlike the erstwhile Congress government in Delhi that used to deploy all its strength to free them,” the PM alleged. “Not just Congress; there are some smaller parties who also take recourse to the politics of short-cuts and appeasement in their lust for power,” he said, alluding to Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP.
Modi alleged that “merely to ensure a few people don’t get offended”, these parties kept mum even when the country witnessed some of the most horrific terrorist attacks. “Worse, when terrorists were arrested, these parties made a backdoor entry into the courts, and some of their functionaries defended the terrorists,” he said.
Since BJP stepped up its response to terrorism, the heads of terror outfits “think 100 times before carrying out some attack on the borders, let alone cities”, the PM declared.
“We barged into their house and finished them,” the PM said, alluding to the surgical strikes. “But Congress and other parties doubted the valour of the armed forces by questioning this action,” he said.
Modi said only BJP could keep the country safe from terrorism, which the party’s governments at the Centre and the states were relentlessly striving to do. “We have shielded Gujarat from terrorism. I want to keep the current generation, which has not even seen a curfew, safe from bomb blasts. Only the double-engine government in Gujarat can ensure this,” he added.
